イギリスの理論系論集にありがちな、肩に力の入った感じの本。最初の Steve Edwards の論文は、科学哲学者のウィリアム・ヒューエルが1851年に万博について書いた文章を論じている。要するに、産業博で展示されるものすべてを把握し、分類する客観的な「科学者の目」の重要性を訴えているらしい。もちろんこの議論に階級意識を読み取ってもよい。面白いパッセージがあったので孫引きしてみる。
It is not only necessary that they should call a brick a brick, and a wire a wire, and a nail a nail, and a tube a tube, and a wheel a wheel; but it is desirable, also, that wires and nails, and tubes, and wheels, should be classified and named, so that all bricks should be of one size, so that a wire number 3, or a tube section 1, or a six-inch wheel, should be constructed so as to correspond to such significations; and even, except for special purposes, no other than such. (44)
ヒューエル自身が大工の親方の息子で、奨学金でケンブリッジに行ってトリニティの学長にまでなった人であることを思うと、ちょっと含蓄がある。
